Frequently Asked Questions
Yoni Steam
Yes! Yoni steaming is very safe. The only risks you have are being uncomfortable if not allowing steam water to cool down for the appropriate amount of time or burns if using a sitz bath and steam water is at a high level close to the vagina…Ouch!
Doctors have often debated that yoni steaming disrupts the pH balance of vaginal flora. However vaginal flora is ever-changing and dynamic due to our diet, medications, laundry detergent/fabric softener, our clothing, stress, pollution and environmental causes, smoking, antibiotics, and many other factors. The medicinal properties of the herbs released by the steam actually help tremendously to restore and recondition our vaginal flora, bringing it back to balance while nourishing the entire uterine tract. Keep in mind that the steam isn’t met to be hot and scalding, rather warm and soothing, like taking a bath or drinking a warm cup of tea.
It is often indoctrinated today in Western medical practices to have hardcore proof, statistics, and research studies for a method to be deemed “acceptable.” Since yoni steaming and many other herbal practices are holistic, (involving mind, body, spirit, culture, community, etc.) researchers and scientists simply aren’t as aggressive in discovering admirations of alternative holistic treatments. Though in no way dismissing Western culture for its many achievements, Western medicine is fast, quick, and hurried, while holistic healing is a slow healing process, restoring both the inner well-being and physical well-being in a unique fashion fit for that specific person.
While it remains today that there are technically no studies done on vaginal steaming, you can research yourself how it has changed the lives of women all over the world in remarkable ways and it will continue to do so. Vaginal steaming was women’s go-to in ancient times for vaginal aliments before gynecology became a practice in Western medicine. Please use your best judgment in deciding whether yoni steaming would be beneficial for you. You know your body better than me, a doctor, or anyone else honey!
Not at all. All you need is herbs, a pot of filtered water, a warm blanket or towel, and a comfortable ambiance. Plain and simple.
During steaming it’s normal to feel like you have to urinate, which is very common. The heat from the steam can stimulate the bladder causing a sensation of wanting to urinate. It’s a good practice to urinate before starting your steam session. Women often experience a sense of calmness and peace. The moist heat steeping up into the vaginal canal is beyond soothing and can feel tranquil. It is common to feel a sense of release and rejuvenation. A lot of women note the feeling of letting go of emotional trauma and energy blockages for a stronger spiritual connection with their inner divine feminine.
After steaming, things may get a little uncomfortable, but this doesn’t last long. Intense cramping and more than your normal clotting can occur for the next upcoming menstrual cycles. Also, brown or black spotting may be a bit heavier before or after menstruation. All these things are normal and are actually a great sign. This is your body’s way of releasing and purging old build-up residue that is no longer needed. Your feminine essence is starting its purification process. By your third, maybe even fourth menstrual cycle after yoni steaming, your blood should start to have a bright red clean look, and PMS symptoms should start to significantly settle down.
Steaming 2-3 times a month is a safe basic regimen. In cases when trying to rid a bacterial infection, steaming daily for 1 to 2 weeks is suitable as well. Do not steam daily for over 2 weeks.
Whatever you decide, you can do either one or both. As long as there’s no fresh blood visible you’re good to go.
Yoni steaming on birth control is safe, except for having an IUD or tubal coagulation. Yoni steaming with these birth control methods may cause potential birth control failures. Since steaming has the effect of releasing old excess residue, there’s a chance an IUD may come out. Also, steaming improves vaginal scarring and ruptures after childbirth. With tubal coagulation, it may start to slowly heal the cauterized scarring needed to prevent pregnancy, defeating the purpose of having tubal coagulation in its entirety.
It is not recommended to add essential oils to steam water for yoni steaming. It is simply not necessary and may cause adverse reactions and unnecessary stress to the uterus and vagina.
Absolutely! Steaming as a preventive measure and overall rejuvenation is an ideal practice for all-around self-care.
Doesn’t matter, whatever works best for you. Please note however vagina steaming is not a method of washing the vagina. You still need to do what’s needed to keep your lady parts clean.
Sure is! Steam away.
While steaming can feel so good and adding a little wine may seem perfect, it can be the total opposite. Alcohol in general dehydrates the body. Add that with 15 minutes of steaming and you’ve put yourself at risk for fatigue and/or a painful headache.
Yoni steaming absolutely promotes the health and assistance of fertility. The steam added with supporting herbs helps to increase circulation within the uterus and fallopian tubes. This is important because our ovaries and reproductive organs need proper blood flow as well as circulation in supporting the growth and health of eggs for fertilization. This is where the health of the uterine lining becomes vastly important. A nourishing embryo cannot properly grow in an unhealthy environment with excess residue from previous menstrual cycles.
Additionally, estrogen is important for the proper growth of the uterine lining. If you are someone who has irregular or long periods, there could be an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone levels. Yoni steaming helps to clean out the uterine lining so estrogen can appropriately do its job. This is especially important for women who may suffer from PCOS, which is said to have high testosterone levels with either long, irregular, short, or absent periods.
Wait until you are done post-partum bleeding. Every woman is different, so this may be between 4-and 6 weeks for most women. Some women may bleed up to 8 weeks after giving birth and that’s fine as well.
Of course! Yoni steaming helps to relieve a lot of menopausal symptoms including hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and more. It’s encouraged for any woman going through menopause as a self-care ritual.
